Ponderings, Poems & Practices
    for Living Your Brilliance!

And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
Rainer Maria Rilke

Hello Dear Timeless One,

This morning I time traveled back to the last millennium. Way back then, I filled a large scrapbook with intuitive collages. The fancy name today is “soul collage”—a random mix of magazine cutouts that offered special meaning and messages to me.

As I flipped through those collage pages, taking time to read some of the questions, reflections, and insights I had written about, I met the same me that was holding that book today.

I’m asking the same questions. I have the same longings.  Even though I have traveled through many seasons, and gone through many changes, in those collages I met that Self which is unchanging.  I recognized the threads of me that were always there. I saw the flow of my life and how I am the water—that which is true and real, no matter what the riverbanks or flow looks like at a given moment.

There’s a sweetness in noticing how those questions are constantly evolving, yet staying the same, through decades.

Those questions have been a guiding beacon, again and again, inviting me to go just a little deeper, and just a little deeper, still.

Back when I created those collages, I imagined I would live into answers, like Rilke suggests is possible; but so far, what I’ve found is that as I grow and change, there are no final answers.  My questions, no matter how often or what form I ask them, bring me back again and again to that ME that is unchangeable and utterly sacred.

Beloved Timeless One,
What are the questions of your heart?
What are the questions you keep coming back to?
What are the questions that bring you home to your precious self?

And remember, YOU are holy ground.

Living the questions with you, in love,
Sharon

Bus Stop Kindness

Hello Dear One,

Wrapped in the spacious hug of grace.  It may sound crazy, but that’s how I felt as I moved around the Denver area by public transportation. (I know, I’m even chuckling as I write that.)

There is a knee replacement surgery in my future, and I recently took a very quick trip to Denver in prep for that. Between appointments I was able to mix in sweet time with a few friends and there was a lot of getting from one place to another. Usually, on a trip like that, I would rent a car; but for now, I’m living without a valid driver’s license so Uber and the Denver transportation system became my chauffeurs.

Part of the grace was how simple technology has made navigating what could have been a logistical nightmare. But the unanticipated grace I deeply appreciated, and have taken home, is the spaciousness that came with each wait—moments to sit and witness whatever was around me, with nothing to do and no place to be but exactly where I was. It seemed like time slowed down and it invited me to slow down with it.

There were connections with people who usually would not cross my path. I soaked up the beautiful diversity that’s quite different from where I live. Over and over again I was surprised by joy from things that I would miss when I am the driver or navigator.

I noticed my habit of wanting to occupy or distract myself, but instead of busying myself, I simply let go of doing.  I just let go.  Ahhhhhh. That’s when I felt hugged by a grace that was peaceful and soft. All that was there was just enough.

I soaked up that hug and brought it home with me, because even though my home life has slowed way down, I notice how I often move from one thing to another, like my day is one long to-do list, without spacious moments of “no-thing”. Funny how I had to travel all the way from the Dominican Republic to Denver for that reminder. lol.

I encourage you to let grace wrap you in spaciousness, too.  If you’d like a little more encouragement, there’s a potent practice I received from Arjuna Ardagh that I’ve shared with you before. Here it is once again. Offered with gratitude.

With loving spaciousness,
Sharon

 ~ P u r e   W a i t i n g ~

Whenever you can, sit and wait.
There is no need to distract yourself by filling the gap with random activity.

At the gate at the airport,
In the few minutes before it’s time to leave the house,
While waiting for the bus …
Rather than picking up a book, or flipping the pages of a magazine, or checking e-mail or switching on the TV . . .

Just sit and wait.   Present . . . ready . . . available . . .  waiting for the next thing to happen.

No need to meditate or get spiritual.
Just wait, like a cat, or a bird in a tree.
Become the waiting itself.

Wait for the kiss of the divine.
Wait for the kiss that kisses your lips from the inside.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~~

Pure waiting is the supremely meditative state.

Usually, we don’t choose waiting consciously, and we resent it.  If we embrace waiting completely—if we relax into it completely without resistance—the body can become fully relaxed, while at the same time the senses become sharp and present.  Then, we are available to life, to the divine source.

I have a friend who is a monk. He told me that during his training, the novices were divided into three groups. Those in the first group, like him, were told to go to another area, where each would be given a meditation hut, and to wait there for further instructions.

The first day passed, and no one came.

Then another day, and another. Food was brought, but no instructions and no instructor. After about a week, from his solitary hut he heard the sounds of someone sweeping the nearby hut that was set aside for the teacher. Surely this meant someone was finally coming! He waited all day, alert, ready, anticipating. But still no one came.

After another week, they cleaned the hut again, yet again no one came. By the next week, he realized that the cleaning was simply done on a weekly basis and meant nothing. He and the other novices stayed in their huts like this for three months. During this time, he sometimes felt angry, sometimes bored, sometimes depressed. But through it all, he always remembered that they had told him to sit and wait for further instructions. He told me that his three-month period of waiting was the most important part of his training. In that time, he learned the art of pure waiting. It trained him to listen totally, to be receptive, to be aware without interpretation.

Practice waiting as often as you can, in the simple trust that if you do nothing, sooner or later the perfect thing will happen on its own.

Ponderings, Poems & Practices
    for Living Your Brilliance!

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere, they’re in each other all along.
~ Rumi ~

Hello Beloved,
Remember all the soulmates who have ever been in your life.

Those were the words recently spoken to me during a luscious on-line breath session.

Soulmate. It’s often referring to that one-and-only true romantic match. Sometimes it’s used for a deep, inexplicable connection with another.  But when I heard that word this time, it hit me in an unusual and grand way.

Remember all the soulmates who have ever been in your life.

I was surprised at who rushed in—a woman I had only talked to once, my grandmother, friends who are close to me, and ones I’ve lost contact with years ago.

There were also long-time beloveds, including my husband and sisters, and a couple newly birthed babies who I have not held, yet are already imbedded in my heart.

During that experience I felt the richness of life and love enfold me.  It was astonishing. It was beautiful. Everyone I’ve known became my soulmate.

So, my dear soulmate —

Who are the soulmates in your life?

And what makes them a soulmate, anyway?

And, get this, there are soulmates you haven’t even met yet!  What happens if you send those yet-to-meets a smile that reaches across time and space.

What could the world be like if we lived as if we were soulmates with everyone?

And how can I live that way today?
Now that would be something!

With love to you,
Sharon

When the river flows through you

When you do things from your soul, the river itself moves through you. Freshness and a deep joy are signs of the current.
Rumi

Hello Love,

I was sitting with a friend. He turned the conversation to meditation and with a sigh of frustrated discouragement said “everyone says I should meditate, but I’m terrible at it.”

He went on to describe the way his mind bounces around. The way his body won’t settle. The ideas and comparisons that trap him in “I can’t do this.”

In other words, he described what I often experience when I sit on a cushion and “try” to meditate.  He and I aren’t the only ones who experience this phenomenon or there would not be a gazillion how-to apps, books, classes, videos and etceteras on how to meditate.

With utter respect and awe for the art and traditions of sitting meditation, that’s often not a good starting point—or maybe never a point—for many of us.

When it comes to meditation—when it comes to anything—be gentle with yourself.

Let your meditation be an act of devotion and peace; not a war with your thoughts, but a falling in love with whatever is arriving.

Be gentle with yourself, Beloved.

Let your meditation find you by following the gentle pull of your heart.

Where does your heart lead you right now?

And how can you bring soft, exquisite attention and presence to that?

It’s as simple as feeling those raindrops tickle your skin.

Or bathing in a sound bath of bird song, or slipping into a tub of fragrant, warm water.

With gentleness, Dear One.

Take something repetitive and turn that into your practice, like knitting, where there’s just one stitch at a time, or falling into the rhythm of kneading bread dough.

What is something you already love that can become your meditation teacher?

Dear Heart, stay curious.

Invite your inner three-year old to come out and play—remember finger painting
—wild, free, uninhibited, with that exquisite attention to what’s in front of you, when that moment becomes your entire world.

Maybe for you it’s free-flow writing; letting something unplanned and unorganized emerge when your pen comes to the page.

Be kind to yourself, Love.

Find yourself in rhythm—the rhythm of swim stokes, bike pedals, or running strides
—the beat of a drum or of your own precious heart.

Follow the coming and going of your breath. Maybe your attention rests on the sensation of air passing through your nose or the subtle movements in your chest, shoulders or belly.

Feel your feet meeting the earth, as if each step was a kiss from the earth to you. Or maybe those steps become the way you kiss the ground?

Dance the repetitive cadence of a waltz; the deep, primal, pulse of African dance; or the completely freeform organic way that only you can move.

Flow with the disciplined grace of a movement practice such as TaiJi.

Sit in your favorite spot with a cup of something yummy—coffee, tea or join me in a mug of cacao
and let all your senses savor that moment.

What might happen if you give up the notion of “meditation” all together and practiced weaving reverence, ritual and aware presence throughout your day?

Always, all ways, with gentleness,
explore the art of
YOUR meditation.

Kissing the ground

And, after all of that, of course, there can be tremendous value in the traditions we name “meditation.”   I’ve been enjoying the vast variety of options on the Insight Timer app.

 As Rumi says—

“There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground”.

Kissing this moment with you,
Sharon

Beloved,

What is life?

Flash of a firefly

It is the flash of a firefly at night.

It is a breath of a buffalo in the wintertime.

Shadow at sunset

It is as the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.

Ohhhhh. THIS precious life.

It is YOU.

Sending this with love,

Soaring!

Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.

— Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Hello Dear Heart,

Recently I had been grumbling about some things. I get like that sometimes. Agitations that roll around in my thoughts. Imagined conversations working to defend the ground I’ve rooted myself in.

Then Grace. I was in a group breath meditation reflecting on light. At first, I saw myself leaning into the light, like a plant leaning herself toward the sun. I wondered, right now, in this situation, how can I lean into light?  In this moment, how do I lean toward something new and nurturing? And what difference can that make?

As I leaned toward that light, something shifted and that light became a feeling of weightlessness. I felt an effervescent lightness filling my body that effortlessly lifted me. It kept lifting me until I had a far-reaching view. From that bird’s eye view my perspective was new, fresh, easy, and peaceful. New insights and inspirations met me there.

A couple days later I explored that lightness when I worked with my own coach. During my session that lightness soaked deep into my body. Deep into my knowing.

That afternoon, “coincidently”, a friend took me up to the top of a mountain close to my home.  From there, the piece of land I live on blended into a patchwork collage of fields, forests, and farms. My home, and the 180 acres of land I live on, was just a small patch in the expansive vista.

I was captivated by the group of crows who were effortlessly soaring, spinning and floating in the invisible currents that gently carried them.  They appeared weightless.  And just like those birds, my vision soared effortlessly into expanded horizons.

And I remember that it’s like this— when I pay attention, life works this way; a tapestry of grace and blessings that invite me home to myself and holds me as I soar.

Soaring into this moment with you, in love,
Sharon

Bird's eye view
From the bird’s eye view, my home is a tiny white speck!

Ponderings, Poems & Practices
    for Living Your Brilliance!

Last week two friends from Colorado were here visiting Kenneth and me. I’ve known Sarah for over 30 years and our days together were wonderful, filled with so much yum—walks on postcard worthy beaches, refreshing ocean swims, rich conversations, heartfelt stories, special moments connecting with the land where I live, and lots of refreshing laughter. Their visit was good nourishment for my heart and soul.

Yesterday, when another friend asked how the visit went, I shared the joy and delight of it, and I also mentioned how I was ready to “get back into the flow of my days”.

Pause here with me. What do you imagine when you read the word “flow”?

Although you have a sense of my meaning from the context of my statement, can you truly know exactly what my flow is like?

Naturally, “flow” has a unique meaning for each of us, and our personal meaning can morph and shift at any time. Metaphors are alive in us.  When we change, our metaphors change. And when our metaphors change, we change.

Sometimes my flow is like a steady current that carries me along with little thought on my part. Other times it might be a meandering stream that invites me to stop and reflect or rest along the way. I’m often surprised at the varied ways flow shows up, in myself and also with clients.

Flow has been—

a beautiful scarf and floaty skirt
a gentle creek
a light breeze
a wild canyon river
a water faucet in a garden
a stream of sweet honey

Flow has even made her appearance as Flo, a waitress on stand-by with a coffee pot, offering a fill-up!

Metaphor. It’s where the juiciness of Soul-based coaching lives—tapping into your own soul’s unique, empowering metaphors, and bringing those home into your body.

Wanna play?  Here are some questions to experiment with on your own:

~ When your flow is just like you’d like it, what kind of flow is that flow?

~ Where could that flow come from?

~ Where is that flow right now?

~ When your flow is exactly like you’d like it, what happens next?

~ What would you like to have happen right now?

 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Of course, flow is just one of a gazillion metaphors you can explore.  During a Soul-based Coaching session you organically explore what’s alive and wanting to be experienced in that unique moment.

As your coach, I offer you simple questions, similar to the ones above, that not only illicit the resourceful state you’re longing for, but also gently meets what’s getting in your way.

Your own soul’s wisdom blossoms in a way the invites change to happen in potent and organic ways. This exploration is usually full of surprise.

I’d love to meet you in this field of possibilities.  Please reach out if you’re ready to come play or are just curious.

Enjoy your flow!
With love,
Sharon

My extraordinary rainbow

Drop the idea of becoming someone, because you are already a masterpiece. You cannot be improved. You have only to come to it, to know it, to realize it.
Osho

Beloved,

It always comes back around to remembering this—you are already an exquisite masterpiece.

I know, it’s easy to forget.  I also know it’s easy to remember.

I took that rainbow photo a few days ago.  It was the most extraordinary rainbow—so low, I could actually see where it’s light was landing on the water, a shimmering as it moved across the sea. It was the light that followed a dark morning rain.

Seeing that rainbow made me feel happy. Not ordinary happy, but a happy that was filled with awe and inspiration. That rainbow helped me remember. Masterpiece.

Like that rainbow, you are an utterly unique expression of light, too. Remember this.

And when you find yourself forgetting, simply notice the unique beauty that is close by. Just take a look in the mirror. Your light is right there waiting for you. Masterpiece.

Love, I know. It’s not always as easy to come back to yourself.

Like me, you can get wrapped up in confusion, fears or doubt. Shadows cover that light and you wonder where that rainbow is. Maybe you even doubt if rainbows are real.

Love, I also am certain, there is a presence within you that knows your very own way back to your breath, your heart, and your truth, even when it is elusive. Sometimes a friend can sit with you in the middle of your longing and in that loving space you begin to hear that presence—the wise voice of your soul.

My role as a coach is to be that one sitting with you, gently offering a blend of meditation, inquiry, and practice that supports your journey home to yourself.

Previously I haven’t written much about my coaching offerings in these messages, but lately I feel the pull to share with more people, so I’ll be including extra stories and invitations in these Sweet Reminders.  Please forward these messages to your friends who might find value here.

You are always welcome to reach out to me with your comments and questions.

I see your light and it is beautiful,
Sharon

Pure Pleasure

“Whenever you think or you believe or you know, you’re a lot of other people:
but the moment you feel, you’re nobody-but-yourself.”

 e.e. cummings

Be sure to read to the end for a fun practice, a valuable resource, and a special complimentary offer that can support you as you move into 2025.

Ahhhh, Pleasure.  The note I’m sending today is something I recently shared with Kenneth’s and my StarDancer Tantra group, but with an updated note.  For those of you who have already received it – double your pleasure.

I’ve wondered about sending out pleasure when we are faced with so much heartbreak and challenge.  In particular I’m thinking of the horrendous fires in Los Angeles where I grew up and have family and dear friends, but there are horrendous things happening in many, many, places all over the world.

I decided it’s the perfect time to send this out.  The practice I share below can soothe the nervous system and help you experience the lifeforce that is always available to you, even – or especially – when the world is on fire.

If you ever hear a little voice that whispers or shouts, “what right do I have to enjoy pleasure when there is so much pain?” read down the page and experiment with the practice I’ve included.  Pleasure. You were made for it.

With love, heartbreak and pleasure,
Sharon

Hello Beloved,

New Year’s greetings and love to you from the Dominican Republic.  We hope you and your loved ones are enjoying these early January days.

The new year invites us to a fresh start.  I’m not much for making lists of resolutions but I have found myself pondering what I’d like to freshen-up this year.

I keep coming to pleasure.  What if 2025 was a year dedicated to pleasure?

I know it only takes seconds of tuned-in touch for pleasure to engulf me, and I feel invigorated, open and sparkling. Yet sometimes I’m forgetting and get caught-up with distraction and busyness.  Pleasure gets tucked away.

The thing is, many of us have been conditioned away from experiencing our pleasure and I find myself rubbing up against judgments—guilty pleasures, hidden pleasures, selfish pleasure—but I’ve noticed that when my pleasure is filling me, I’m creative, engaged, curious, kind, compassionate, and spacious.  My experience of life becomes orgastic.

I think all of our intentions, resolutions, and hopeful plans, point to the desire for pleasure—that feeling of aliveness and fulfillment. Even our altruistic, open heart yearns for pleasure.

That pleasure, which we often chase and might believe is beyond our reach, is here, right now. Just pay attention. Pleasure happens in this moment when we come home to ourselves—when we come home to the body which is the portal to our experience. That’s why I sink into this e.e. cummings quote:

The moment that you feel,
you are no body but yourself.

I invite you to join me in playing with this simple practice, swiped with gratitude from Betty Martin, of feeling and coming home to pleasure. Coming home to your precious self.

Cultivating the Pleasure
Through Your Hands

This practice is a gentle allowing for relaxed pleasure to arrive through your awareness of sensation.

You are taking action toward your own pleasure; waking up brain cells that will expand your ability to receive pleasure in all parts of your body. It develops the ability to consciously choose where you bring your attention.

This practice is not about an outcome or making something happen. There is no goal to reach. Practice for the experience itself, with curiosity and openness.

When we engage with this type of attention triggers and emotions may come up. Welcome whatever comes, gently meeting the edges of your discomfort where you can still soften into relaxation, not forcing or pushing through anything.

~*~*~*~*
Here we go-

~Sit leaning back with your back supported and straight.

~ Put pillow on your lap so your hand is supported.

~ Take any household object and slowly explore it with the palm of one of your hands. Notice every detail the of the object. A variation of this is to use one hand to hold and move the object on the palm of the other hand. Explore both.

~ Your attention should be on the sensations in your hand and away from the story/description about the object.

~  Watching your hand can be helpful.

~ Move very slowly. When you think you are going slow see if you can move ½ that speed. At times come into stillness.

~ When your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to the sensations in your hand.

~ Begin to notice pleasant sensations. Keep your attention on that area and see if you can feel the pleasure a little deeper. Notice if the pleasure begins to expand beyond the skin you are touching.

~ Welcome the sensations of pleasure. How much pleasure are you willing to feel in your hand?

~ Continue this touch until you feel your body shift into relaxation. Your breath will slow, and your muscles will soften.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

That’s where you begina simple practice for waking up and deepening your pleasure.

Spend 5 – 10 minutes a day with this practice and notice the consequences.

Explore the video resources on Betty’s website. Not only does she offer instruction for this practice; but also, the science behind it.   While you’re there check out her other free offerings. You’ll find a lot of great stuff.

Betty Martin
With deep appreciation, this is shared from Dr. Betty Martin.  It is a foundational practice for her work.

There’s a stranger out there who still thinks of you because you were kind to them when they really needed it.

Never stop being that person.

Hello Lovelies,

I’m sitting on my terrace. There’s a gentle rain shower happening.  The sound of the rain is cozy and turns me inward. The perfect Solstice afternoon. I’m reminded there is no place to go.

A while ago, I came across this quote somewhere on social media:

There’s a stranger out there who still thinks of you because you were kind to them when they really needed it —
Never stop being that person.

Those words touched me with a sweetness as I remembered strangers whose momentary acts of kindness are permanently tucked into my heart —

A hug in the middle of a TSA line as I navigated the unexpected death of my brother. She said, “If a hug from a stranger would help, I’d like to give you one.”  I didn’t realize how much I needed that hug.

When it was clear I would not have a place on the night’s last flight from Phoenix to Durango, he said, “Take my seat on this flight.  I have a place where I can stay tonight.”  Relief and gratitude.

There were no words from the homeless fellow who’s smiling blue eyes had a glimmer that woke me up. I will never forget how his gaze spoke to my heart. Humble astonishment.

And oh, so many others.

But I had never stopped to ponder how, unbeknownst to me, I have a similar place in some stranger’s memory.  We don’t know when an unplanned moment meant the world to someone else.  We cannot manufacture those moments or those connections.  We can’t plan for them. But we can make room for them by being a kind presence in this wacky, unpredictable world.

It’s not always easy, but I never want to stop being that person.

Remember, dear one, there’s a stranger who still thinks of you because you were kind to them when they needed it.

YOU are that person.

May you see the miracles that are right there, waiting for you.

With love,
Sharon
